Joanna is a member of the History Faculty at King’s and in 2014, Joanna was awarded an MBE in recognition for her work in promoting British higher education internationally. In June 2015 she was appointed a Commonwealth Commissioner by the Secretary of State for Development.

Dr Diana Beech

Director of Policy and Advocacy

Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI)

Diana is the current Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI). She has experience of policy-making in both Whitehall and at the EU-level, having recently worked at the Department for Education on the landmark reforms of the UK higher education sector and having been a founding member of the European Commission’s ‘Voice of the Researchers’ network. Diana has also previously managed projects looking at the values behind EU research and innovation policy and examining the impact of open access mandates on the arts and humanities in the UK.

Allie Taylor

Allie Taylor is the Academic Liaison Librarian for Humanities and Creative Arts at the University of Worcester, and has worked in academic libraries since 2001. Having begun her career teaching English as a foreign language, she is particularly interested in information literacy and student learning. Her current role involves helping students from 19 different subject areas find the information they need to complete their degrees successfully. Allie works at the University of Worcester’s award winning Hive, the UK’s first fully integrated public and academic library.

The project reviewed how we work in partnership with our Academic Schools to enhance engagement with the Library collections. The project raised significant interest, discussion and debate amongst the academic community, and has impacted on our development plans for the Reading List Service at Kent.

Louise is the Humanities Senior Library Assistant and Talis technical lead at the Templeman Library, University of Kent. Louise gained extensive experience in the public libraries before moving to Higher Education sector in 2015, and is leading on the next phase of the Reading List Service delivery, with regards to new policies, processes and training. One important area of this work has been working with Kent’s OPERA project to bring accessible resources to students with print disability in a scalable and efficient way via mainstream reading list processes

Rachel has responsibility for Reading Lists (using Talis Aspire), as well as team supervision and teaching students information skills. The Learning and Teaching Support team are also responsible for purchase suggestions and dealing with library enquiries. Helen has been Head of Academic Liaison at Royal Holloway, University of London since 2012. She has worked in academic libraries since 2001 and was previously at the University of  Brighton and City University. In her current role she manages the liaison team which includes 5 liaison librarians and 8 reading list assistants. She has led the project to implement the Reading List system at Royal Holloway working with library staff, academic staff and students to ensure the success of the system.

Technical Consultant


Tim's background in public and academic libraries, and subsequent immersion into commercial companies as a consultant has given him a varied perspective that allows him to see how to get things done in different project environments. As Technical Consultant at Talis, Tim gets asked all sorts of questions that are often along the lines of “can we do X with Y?”. He loves a challenging problem and seeks to find creative solutions that are both cost-effective and require minimal intervention for maximum return, in order to make other people successful in what they need to do.

Track 2

Constructive Alignment is currently a major pedagogic theory where all the elements of a module directly contribute to students achieving a specific set of Learning Outcomes. However, reading lists are typically not Constructively Aligned - this talk will ask ‘can reading lists be redesigned to deliver Learning Outcomes?’

At the University of Birmingham ResourceLists@Bham (our version of Talis Aspire) has given the library a defined role within the University’s teaching and learning strategy. We will explore real examples of how the system not only supports this strategy, but is slowly shaping and, ultimately, transforming teaching and learning, University-wide.

What makes a good reading list? What do students do with reading lists? What helps them make the most of the reading list for a module? This session will give a practical illustration of how to encourage academics of the need to engage with reading lists. It will be useful to anyone hoping to further enthuse academic colleagues with online reading list systems or hoping to breathe new life into departments where enthusiasm is flagging. It examines how to engage students with reading and how academic staff and the library can support students in using the resources available. It draws on best practice from academic colleagues at UW, examining (among other things) the effect of list length, layout and annotation.

Join us for the Talis Awards presentation on the evening of day one. It will a great opportunity to network with peers you may have missed during the day and join us in recognising and celebrating the best practices within the Talis community. Dress code: Smart casual.

Track 2

Find out how librarians at Aberystwth are working with academic departments, business information colleagues and the University’s quality control staff to maintain an accurate Aspire hierarchy from which to report instant uptake statistics.

Track 3

In conjunction with OPERA - a university-wide accessibility project at the University of Kent, supported by advice and guidance from Jisc, we have been successfully delivering accessible materials via our regular reading list processes through Talis to enable students with print disability to access resources to support their studies. We will share our experiences of progressing this work, covering both the challenges and successes.
