Previous Talis Insight conferences were free to attend. Why is the 2018 event chargeable?

Talis Insight conferences have been growing year on year, since its introduction in 2015. Last year we hosted nearly 200 delegates from 86 Higher Education Institutions. Talis have funded the majority of the cost of hosting the conference each year, with some contribution from the partner community through exhibitor sponsorship.

In order to ensure that the conference remains sustainable for both the community and Talis, without sacrificing the quality, we need to pass on some of the cost of hosting this event to the attendees.




How do I pay for my tickets?

We will raise an invoice and send to your institution. Your finance team will have 30 days to arrange the payment to confirm your registration. If there may be a delay in the processing of the invoice, please let us know at insight@talis.com


Can we book a two day ticket, but send different people to attend different days?

A two day ticket may not be shared between two people. If you would like to send two different people on each day, please purchase two single day tickets.


Can we book now and then decide who will attend later?

Yes. You can book now under any name, and then if you would like to change who will be attending, you can simply transfer the ticket to that person by emailing us at insight@talis.com. Note that tickets can only be transferred to another person in the same institution. You may transfer the ticket as many times as you want.

Day One

1st May

Aberystwyth University is the Good University Guide University of the year for Teaching Quality 2018 and is jostling for top position in all the student rankings, but just two years ago the opposite was true. I shall talk about our journey, the investments we made and the culture changes we found necessary to deliver this turnaround. It is, I hope, a fascinating story.

Track 1

This discussion will focus on the digital strategies put in place by Universities and Academic Libraries that aim to meet the ever growing requirements of students of the digital age. We will hear from library leaders about the digital strategies within their own universities.

Zena and Laura give a roundup of the continuous developments since last Talis Insight, also providing an update on current work in progress and future plans for the continuous development of Talis Aspire. Their new roles within Talis have given them scope to improve how the Services and Product teams work with universities and the wider Talis team and will provide an update on how those changes will be implemented from a university viewpoint.

Track 2

In 2015-16, Talis Aspire Reading Lists and Digitised Content was implemented at the University of Reading. During both the initial planning stages and implementation we recognised that academic buy-in was key to the success of embedding Talis into the day to day working practices of the institution. Concerns around tutors seeing a shift to direct linking to resources via online lists as ‘spoon feeding’, led to us focusing most of our energies on developing strategies that would promote the pedagogical advantages of using online reading lists.
Two years on we still face challenges with academic engagement and, subsequently, the impact of this on student experience and library staff workflows. Following a small-scale staff survey conducted in summer 2017 we have reassessed our staff engagement activities and workflows, resulting in proposed recommendations aiming to address the concerns raised, as well as taking into account issues currently experienced by library staff which have impacted on our internal procedures. These recommendations focus more on improving perceptions around time and resourcing requirements, exploiting system functionality in a more proactive way, reviewing our current supporting materials and guidance, and refocusing our communications strategy to deliver timely information at point of need.
This session will share our experiences, discuss the approaches taken and methods employed, before reflecting on our next steps.

The University of Roehampton approved a reading list strategy in July 2015. Library Services and academic colleagues agreed further shared guidelines in a Resource List Framework (RLF) in 2016 to help embed the strategy. One of its key principles is to use resource lists consistently across the University to provide a clear guide to support students with their learning through directing reading, organised as clear week-to-week or topic guides for students.
The RLF is now embedded in the Universities NSS/TEF action plan. Library Services were asked to review and prepare statistics that indicated compliance with the RLF, and for Library Services to re-engage with academic colleagues to implement the framework consistently across modular-led programmes.
This presentation outlines the approach Library Services at the University of Roehampton have taken to support academic colleagues in implementing the university NSS/TEF action plan and the RLF. We will outline how we used TalisAspire reports and other data sources to create a pilot audit tool to help academic departments and our academic engagement librarians to identify module reading lists that may present cause for concern. This has enabled us and academic colleagues to get a broad understanding of how resource lists comply with the framework and to engage with academic colleagues to improve the student experience.

Track 3

A well embedded and well used Aspire tenancy provides the scaffolding to allow us to direct our attention at the broader issue of ‘reading strategies.’ Reading strategies is not just a library issue – at Keele it is multi-team, academic-led, and focusses on encouraging students to develop their information literacy and critical reading skills. This becomes possible when we get the basics right.
Making the basics simple. Online reading lists, in use since 2009, provide the delivery route for over 80% of our reading lists. They are integrated with the VLE and students are directed to access them as part of their pre-arrival online induction. Core texts and key readings are available online wherever possible, requiring the library to be flexible about ebook provision and make heavy use of digitisation service. Academics are encouraged to provide structure and guidance on reading strategies within lists. This is not spoonfeeding – it is about making access as simple as possible to allow students to focus on… How to choose reading and how to use reading.
Not enough to just make access work. We want to equip students with the skills they need to develop their own reading strategies, emphasising criticality and critical reading skills. As well as library staff our ‘Student Learning’ team run a series of workshops and ‘reading retreats’. Both teams work with academic colleagues to encourage this approach throughout learning and teaching.

It was an early decision at Aberystwyth University Library in 2014 to encourage academic staff to build their own module reading lists into Talis Aspire and it has certainly paid off as we approach full coverage. Subject librarians encountered a wide range of views about online reading lists and their potential for learning and teaching, however there has been both formal and informal dialogues from the start. These have helped shape the project and academic staff have become some of our most vocal champions and valuable feedback sources. Find out what worked and what didn’t as we made the case for online reading lists to these important partners, and how this team effort has paid off in the NSS and a deeper engagement.

Discover the options that you have to integrate Talis Aspire with different learning management systems. We'll discuss common scenarios for student discovery and list integration workflows.

The University of Hertfordshire is implementing Talis Aspire as part of a Guided Learner Journey which aims to provide consistent access to information resources by embedding them at the point of need. We will outline our implementation project and the process of evaluating the success of the rollout.

This is an opportunity for you to share how the integration with your learning system has helped make a difference to the use of reading lists. A chance for you to talk about strategies and compare notes. This will be an open discussion.

In 2016 the University of Birmingham opened the doors of its new £60m library. This followed years of planning which covered all aspects of the physical build and re-defining our service offer. Of course one of the key aspects of our service is the collection, both physical and virtual. The new library offered us the opportunity to rethink how we would might manage and develop our collections in future. Here are some reflections on how using TALIS Aspire resource lists and the digitised content model in that context.

Drawing on the experience of working in partnership with a research group (the Sussex Humanities Lab), our local authorities (East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council) and an academic publisher (SAGE Publications), this presentation will highlight the exciting and challenging projects and developments that can be achieved through collaborative working and the impact that this can have on the skills of library staff.

Good research, on any topic, requires several angles of approach. This is especially true when looking at a musical genre as fluid as jazz. This trio of professor and two MA students gives us a practical example demonstrating the usefulness of lists and how they provide resources and ways in to further databases. We outline research questions and show the product, in the form of an informed cello, trumpet, and piano trio created as a result of research that started with reading lists.

Track 1

The University of Westminster purchased Talis Aspire in 2014. After an early-adopters phase, there was a University-wide launch in September 2015.
My presentation will reflect on the Library’s experience of implementing Talis Aspire so far and I will be focusing in particular on the work we are currently undertaking to develop a University-wide reading policy as part of a learning and teaching action plan led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Experience).
I will also offer my thoughts on what I see are the challenges for writing a policy that goes beyond detailing library processes to incorporate the experiences and responsibilities of academic staff and students.

Track 2

Nicola Ward and Rachel Fell will talk about how they were inspired by Allie Taylor's session from last year's Talis Insight conference and how they re-purposed it at Manchester Metropolitan University. They will focus on how they addressed the question of how you get students to actually engage with reading list material and how this led them on to further develop their Reinvigorating Reading Lists session.

The University of Surrey introduced Talis Aspire in 2013, and more recently, the digitised content module; Currently all modules have had a reading list created, with around 2,600 lists held on the system. Initial promotion and uptake was process driven (as also noted by Siddall, c. 2017, and others) and we have identified a need to further promote reading lists as a tool for pedagogic gain (supported in the wider literature by Boyle, L. & Mitchell, D. 2016, amongst others).
As a team, the Faculty Engagement Librarians are exploring how we can promote the role of the reading list as a temporary scaffolding tool for teachers to support their student from subject novice to independent learner (Wass, R., & Golding, C. 2014). This presentation will explore three specific areas: Developments in our approach to reading lists engagement; Initial observations in a study of student and academic approaches to the use of reading lists in learning and teaching (planned to commence December 2017); Experiences gained in the development and delivery of a forthcoming CPD workshop delivered through the Department of Higher Education at Surrey - Pedagogic gains from reading lists: Scaffolding or spoon-feeding?
The session will provide an opportunity to share experience, best practice and new ideas in the developing area of research into and Librarian support for the use of reading lists as pedagogic tools.

Track 3

Four years on from service launch, we wanted to demonstrate the usage of the Reading List service. We set out to design a purpose-built dashboard, utilising the statistics generated by Reading Lists and our interactions with Faculty. This session will focus on our approach, the sources that we take our data from, and the rationale behind what we chose to include.

The University of East Anglia has had an evolving approach to the implementation and adoption of Talis since first purchasing it in 2015. The institution has recently moved to a full adoption model for the 2017/18 academic year. Robin Farndon discusses the UEA’s experiences to date, along with the potential opportunities and pitfalls encountered along the way.

Track 4

We'll be sharing a summary of the most frequent data sets that universities want to merge in order to report on reading lists and their impact within the university. Find out what data is available from Talis Aspire and strategies to work with that data.

An update on the APIs that are available now and those that are currently being built. Find out how APIs support deeper integration with third party systems.

Dr. Devine will discuss the benefits of embedding Resource Lists in course areas on Blackboard VLEs. This enables students to access every Resource List associated with their course in a single place. Moreover, the identification of particular Resource List sections (or sub-lists), such as on study skills, support services and pastoral care, provides students with ease of access to resources while progressing from Level 4 to 6. In effect, a singular hub for Resource Lists enables students to map their own journey, progression, and learning in line with the research themes and curriculum(s) of particular modules/courses. The course area can also include Resource Lists and sub-lists beyond a specific module/course that are considered relevant. This is of particular use to Joint Honours and multi-disciplinary courses. Lastly, Dr. Devine incorporates student-led feedback and perspectives on Resource Lists and the associated benefits qua mapping student journeys, independent learning, research, and engagement.

In this talk, Kate shares some personal thoughts on a career in academic librarianship, and invites you to consider your own past, present and future in the profession. Join us at the Talis Awards

The Talis Awards are a great networking opportunity, as well as a chance to see what the Talis Aspire User Group have achieved over the past 12 months.

The Talis Awards will be held at the Rotunda in the Library of Birmingham, Europe's largest public library, which is connected to the REP Theatre. At the Talis Awards you will enjoy a three-course meal, drinks and entertainment from a live band, in an exclusive location, at the Book Rotunda.
We will be awarding members of the Talis Aspire User Group on their work with Talis over the past 12 months. Awards are selected by the Talis Team and by our Talis Aspire User Group representatives.
All tickets types include an invite to the Talis Awards.

A snapshot of Talis Insight Europe 2017

Talis Insight 2017 was attended by over 170 library professionals from over 80 Higher Education Institutions from across UK, Ireland and Norway. The two-day event featured 31 speakers who covered topics such as use of digital learning resources, student experience and eTextbooks.
